The rich history of Linz is clearly reflected in its plentiful landmarks and eye-catching monuments. Few come more impressive than either the Old Cathedral (Ignatiuskirche) or the New Cathedral (Neuer Dom), the latter of which is the biggest of all Austria's many cathedrals and dominates the Linz skyline.

Standing at the very top of the Pöstlingberg, the Wallfahrtsbasilika is another of the city's plentiful landmarks and is clearly visible from all around Linz. For something more modern, the Brucknerhaus was created in the early 1970s and features glass-clad architecture, which is quite timeless and almost appears as if it was built yesterday.

The Wallfahrtsbasilika is a large and imposing Roman Catholic church, and is actually dedicated to the Virgin Mary's 'Seven Sorrows'.

Dating from the middle of the 18th century, the Wallfahrtsbasilika has a number of attractions, namely the elaborate facade and beautiful interior, particularly the dome and its colourful paintings.

The Brucknerhaus is one of the city's most striking and glitzy modern landmarks. This building is used for a variety of different purposes and many of the city's biggest events are staged here, while the Brucknerhaus is also home to a series of vast concert halls, which accommodate audiences of almost 2,000 people.

Known to many as simply the 'Old Cathedral', the Ignatiuskirche was constructed in the latter part of the 17th century and operated as the city's cathedral between the years of 1785 to 1909. Just one of the many historical landmarks in this part of Linz, the single-nave Ignatiuskirche features an impressive Baroque facade and comprises a number of different chapels. Of particular interest to visitors is the marble high altar and its detailed painting, created by Italian artist Antonio Bellucci.

St. Mary's is a magnificent Neo-Gothic creation and although this is Austria's largest cathedral, the Neuer Dom is not really the tallest, since its 134-metre / 440-foot tower was not actually permitted to exceed the height of the Stephansdom in Austria's capital city of Vienna. The first brick was laid in the early 1860s, with the New Cathedral finally being consecrated some 60 years later, in 1924. Step inside and you will be greeted by a simply cavernous interior, large enough to hold around 20,000 worshipers in total.
